How to set up a virtual private network (VPN) on your Xbox One
So, we’re guessing cybersecurity concerns are finally getting to you (as they should!) and you’re wondering what you can do to reduce the risk of your devices getting vandalized. Smart progress!
While a lot can be done, most methods are costly, take a lot of time and effort to set up, and sometimes don’t even end up living up to the expectations. In our opinion, a smarter, much more efficient way of securing your online adventures is to simply use a VPN.
This is no new news though, we’re sure you’ve already heard of VPN usage. However, a lesser-known fact is that VPNs can also be used with your Xbox devices—a gaming console people usually don’t associate with a cybersecurity threat.
But come to think of it, and Xbox One is an easier way to get into your Wi-Fi and after that other devices as compared to others. The good news is that now that you know, you don’t have to go looking for guides on using it on the internet—we’re going to spill all the details right here.
But first, there’s something else too…
Is there anything else that VPNs are good for?
Well, of course. Granted that VPNs are excellent security tools, the way they work gives you many extra benefits. One of the most common benefits of using a VPN for Xbox devices is that they will let you access a wider variety of games, including a chance to play ones that haven’t even been released in your country yet.
Furthermore, if you’re a gamer, you most likely hate internet issues like ISP throttling, right? If you don’t know what that is, your local internet service providers throttle your bandwidth if you’ve consumed too much data at a time to make sure you have data till the end of the month.
This means that if you’ve ever experienced sluggish internet right after you’ve made a huge download or gamed for a couple of hours, you’ve already been acquainted with ISP throttling. The good news is that VPNs can also help you with ISP throttling by making sure that you’re wearing the digital equivalent of Harry Potters’ invisibility cloak.
Now let’s talk about how all this even works.
How do VPNs work?
VPNs work by letting you connect to the internet anonymously, using a proxy server sitting in another country. In this process, your original IP address is hidden, and you’re using a temporary IP address that actually belongs to the server you’re connected to—making you completely anonymous online. This is why you’re safe from hackers, cybercriminals and sniffers online—your online activities are virtually untraceable.
Connecting to the internet through a proxy server also makes it easy for you to circumvent geo-restrictions and access content that is blocked for you, such as games and movies that are blocked in your region.
Are you interested? Let’s finally get into how to install and set it up on your Xbox One. Before we begin, make sure that you already have vpn for xbox one subscription.
Connecting your Xbox to a VPN
Now, there are two ways that you can set up a VPN on an Xbox One. The first is through a router, and the second one is through a PC. Overall, it’s better to set it up through your router because connecting it through your PC will require you to keep it connecting through an Ethernet cable the entire time you’re using it.
Now that we have that out of the way, here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
Through a router
Step 1: The first step is to log in to your router’s control panel. When you’ve done this, enter your VPN details.
To begin, enter your router’s IP address into your web address bar and find the control panel. You’ll now have to enter your VPN details. Now, it is essential not to get confused here because the particulars can vary. The best idea here is to follow the instructions provided by your VPN service provider to use it with your router.
Step 2: It’s now time to connect your Xbox with your router
Now, find the settings tab on your Xbox, and click ‘Network.’ From here, highlight ‘Network Settings’ and hit ‘A’. Now go ahead and ‘set up wireless network’ and you should now be able to configure your Xbox with your router.
Some devices also allow the option of connecting your Xbox directly with the router via an Ethernet cable. If you have this option, go ahead and use it!
And you’re done!
Through your PC/Computer
Step 1: Connect your computer to your VPN service
Download and install the VPN client on your desktop and configure it once it is installed. It’s important to know that many VPN providers offer multiple apps, each for a different device, so make sure you’re downloading the right one.
Step 2: Connect your Xbox to your computer
To do this, ensure that you are logged in as the administrator. To open the power user menu, proceed with Windows+X and hit ‘network connections’.
Then, from the options that appear, select ‘change adapter options’. Now, you can go ahead and right-click on your VPN connection. When you’ve done that, select ‘properties.’ Now, find the ‘sharing’ tab and check the ‘allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’.
Now, if you’ve done this right, you should see a drop-down menu. Select ‘Ethernet’. If you don’t have that option, select ‘local area network’ and press OK. You should not be able to use your Xbox with your VPN connection easily!
In some cases, Xbox One fails to recognize the network. If this happens when you’re setting it up, open your ‘network settings’ and check if it is set to connect using a wired network. If it’s not, make sure that it is, and then try connecting again.
